Hello, I’m Doctor Dalal El Halabi! I’m a licensed psychoanalytic psychotherapist, clinical and adjustment psychologist, and a mental health trainer specialized in music therapy. I hold certificates in psychodrama, training of trainers (TOT), and children’s drawing interpretation. I hold a PhD from the Lebanese University, and my thesis was on the phenomenon of sexual harassment among orphan children and the meanings of their drawings. I strongly believe in the power of therapy through art, especially music, theater, and drawing, which is the reason why I decided to pursue a specialization in art therapy. When it comes to my 10 year-long experience, it includes being a mental health trainer at the IABC and other NGOs, a psychotherapist at the Islamic Orphanage House, a psychological specialist at the Ray of Hope Center, and a psychologist at Haret Al Charfeh school. I have conducted numerous lectures, trainings, and workshops on mental health, as well as art therapy for teachers, parents, children, students, social workers, administrative and educational teams, refugees, NGOs (such as BASMA), local communities, and staff. For example, I have trained the Islamic Orphanage House’s staff on how to utilize art therapy with children who were victims of rape and sexual assault (i.e. with child protection cases). The topics I coach and train on include art therapy, psychodrama, communication skills, self-care, self-confidence, learning development, and effective teamwork. I have my own private clinic where I provide my consultations, and I focus on all cases of both children and adults. These cases include women whom I work towards empowering (especially when it comes to building their capacity and self-esteem), children with disabilities, genetic disorders and autism, and individuals who suffer from mental disorders. I also train and provide therapy for the parents of special needs children in order to help their children thrive by educating and guiding their caregivers. I am a founding member of the Women Empowerment Support Association (WESA) and a volunteer at the Lebanese Association for Democratic Elections (LADE). I have also established a local NGO that aims to empower women through giving trainings on personal development, skill-building and capacity building. Regularly, I am invited to attend international workshops and conferences as a panel expert to provide lectures on art therapy in education, music therapy, and more. During these events, I meet mental health experts from all around the world to discuss art therapy and other topics related to this field. In my community, I am actively conducting campaigns and lectures to raise awareness on and limit the existing taboo surrounding mental health.
